Non-Life Insurance Sector Records 8.78% Growth in Gross Direct Premiums Through March 2026
India’s non-life insurance sector recorded steady growth in gross direct premium underwritten up to March 2026, according to provisional figures presented in the infographic. The industry reported total gross direct premium of Rs. 28,921.26 crore, compared with Rs. 26,586.44 crore in the corresponding period of the previous year, representing an overall growth of 8.78%.
General insurers continued to account for the largest share of the market, recording cumulative premiums of Rs. 278,608.13 crore, with year-on-year growth of 7.97%. Their market share stood at 82.88%. Among individual general insurers, The New India Assurance Co. Ltd. recorded the highest market share at 12.74%, followed by ICICI Lombard General Insurance Co. Ltd. at 8.54%.
Standalone health insurers reported cumulative premiums of Rs. 45,865.81 crore, registering 19.40% growth and increasing their market share to 13.64%. The segment was led by Star Health & Allied Insurance Co. Ltd., with a 5.53% market share.
Specialised insurers recorded cumulative premiums of Rs. 11,676.19 crore, growing 5.14% during the period. Overall, the figures indicate continued expansion across India’s non-life insurance industry, with health insurance emerging as a particularly strong growth segment. The figures remain provisional and reflect revised IRDAI reporting.
