Non-Life Insurance Industry Records 9.47% Growth in Premiums Up to July 2026
India’s non-life insurance industry continued to register healthy growth during the financial year 2026–27, with gross direct premium income reaching Rs. 1,39,303.07 crore for the period up to July 2026. The industry recorded 9.47% year-on-year growth, reflecting sustained demand across key insurance segments.
The data highlights the diverse contribution of general insurance, health insurance and specialised insurance segments. Within general insurance, motor, health and other miscellaneous covers remain significant contributors to overall premium collections, while liability and engineering-related covers also continue to support industry growth.
The standalone health insurance segment demonstrated particularly strong momentum, recording cumulative premium of Rs. 16,493.06 crore, representing 31.4% growth over the previous year. Health-retail and health-group products continued to account for a substantial portion of this business.
Among individual insurers, several private players recorded notable growth across specific segments, while established public and private insurers continued to maintain significant market shares. The figures underline increasing competition and the expanding role of health and diversified insurance products in the Indian market.
These figures are provisional and unaudited. IRDAI has also revised its reporting format and excluded premiums from long-term policies from reporting with effect from October 2024; consequently, current-year growth rates should be interpreted with this reporting change in mind.
