Public Sector General Insurers: Performance Snapshot July 2026

Public sector general insurers (PSUs) continued to demonstrate steady growth during the April–July 2026 period, although their overall performance remained behind the broader general insurance market. According to the provisional IRDAI Flash Report, the four PSU general insurers recorded a combined premium of Rs. 39,166.38 crore, reflecting 4.35% year-on-year growth. In comparison, the overall general insurance industry grew by 8.09% during the same period.

The New India Assurance Co. Ltd. remained the largest PSU general insurer, recording cumulative premium of Rs. 17,023.40 crore and a market share of 14.27%. United India Insurance Co. Ltd. recorded the highest cumulative growth among the four PSUs at 8.69%, while National Insurance Co. Ltd. delivered strong July growth of 13.84%.

In contrast, The Oriental Insurance Co. Ltd. reported a 17.56% decline in July 2026, although its cumulative April–July performance remained marginally positive at 0.58%.

The combined market share of the four PSU insurers stood at approximately 38.47% of total general insurance premiums during April–July 2026. However, faster-growing private insurers continue to exert competitive pressure. The performance highlights the need for PSUs to accelerate growth, strengthen innovation, improve customer engagement, and protect their market position.
